A rumor is spreading throughout the Middle East that affirms the group Islamic State (ISIS, shorthand for Daesh) has been created by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), to the extent that the US embassy in Beirut had to denounce it publicly on August 6. “Any suggestion that the United States ever considered recognizing the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant as anything other than a terrorist organization, or had any role in its creation, is patently false.
Allegations circulating in Lebanon to the contrary are a fabrication,” reads the communiqué. About more than a dozen members of Iraqi Parliament would agree with the Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr who blamed the CIA for creating the group. “We know about who made Daesh,” allegedly said recently-appointed deputy prime minister Bahaa al-Araji.
Among the local population, the situation is even more alarming with a growing number who subscribe to such a story. It is true that repeated US and allied support to rebels against Syrian president Bashar al-Assad for almost three years strengthened a theory which gets even more convincing when Daesh members parade with weapons and vehicles made in USA.
