Real change now: 43-year-old Liberal Party leader Justin Trudeau, son of former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, will become the second-youngest Prime Minister in Canada’s history. He won an unexpected resounding victory in general elections against the Conservative Party led by Stephen Harper, himself Prime Minister for the last ten years.
Criticizing what he considered as “benefits to the wealthy” given by the Conservatives, Trudeau prescribes immediate investment “in jobs and growth and lower taxes for the middle-class.”
A former French and math teacher, Trudeau should therefore conduct a center-left economic policy that insists on “fair opportunity for everyone” in a country of “dreamers, innovators, builders,” without basically challenging Canada’s market economy. Trudeau asks the wealthiest “to pay a bit more”, promises a benefit plan to give families more money to help with the high cost of raising their kids and an investment plan in growth.
