In just a few months, the diplomatic environment has changed considerably and this trend could become even more complex in the medium term.
According to Charles Rault, founder of Cyceon and international affairs expert, 2017 will not only be the year of political risk but also that of the comeback of “visible toughness” on the world stage. “Everyone knows that international relations are a difficult environment. The change this year, however, lies in the personalities in power and in their bilateral interactions,” explained Rault.
Like US President Donald Trump talking on the phone with his Australian counterpart Malcolm Turnbull or German Chancellor Angela Merkel meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in an icy atmosphere, “smiles, even of facade, disappeared and this tells volumes about the quick deterioration of the global context,” added Charles Rault.
