The test, which was successfully completed on May 30, 2017, was long overdue and did not result from the worsening North Korean context, the Pentagon’s (DOD) US missile defense agency (MDA) said.
The MDA therefore has advanced technology to intercept in flight a craft that could theoretically embark a nuclear device. This development will undoubtedly call on the other nuclear powers, in particular Russia, on the validity of agreements on the limitation of strategic armaments.
According to Vice-Admiral Jim Syring, Director of the MDA, “this system is vitally important to the defense of our homeland, and this test demonstrates that we have a capable, credible deterrent against a very real threat.” Syring did not say where such threat could originate from, but analysts mainly point at North Korea and Iran.
