In the 2017 edition of its annual report on trafficking in persons and forced labor, the US State Department ranked China among the world’s worst human trafficking offenders. The move could spark further tensions between Beijing and Washington as President Donald Trump has sought to appease them since the start of his presidential term following the controversial statements he made during the 2016 election campaign.
“The Government of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) does not fully meet the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking and is not making significant efforts to do so,” bluntly read the report. “We are firmly opposed to the irresponsible remarks made by the US based on its domestic law about others’ efforts against human trafficking,” the Chinese MFA replied.
