Southern Company is a holding company that owns all of the outstanding common stock of Alabama Power, Georgia Power, and Mississippi Power, each of which is an operating public utility company. These traditional electric operating companies supply electric service in the states of Alabama, Georgia, and Mississippi. These traditional electric operating companies are vertically integrated utilities that own generation, transmission, and distribution facilities. Southern Company Gas, which was acquired by Southern Company in July 2016, is an energy services holding company whose primary business is the distribution of natural gas in four states – Illinois, Georgia, Virginia, and Tennessee – through the natural gas distribution utilities. Southern Company Gas is also involved in several other businesses that are complementary to the distribution of natural gas.
